                                                      Rates

| Technical Labor | Support Labor | Advanced Light Source Access | DRUM Mass and Optics | DRUM S-XRF | Filter S-XRF | Sampler Rental |

In order to make its capabilities available to the campus and university while maintaining key infrastructure, the DELTA Group has developed College of Engineering-approved official recharge rates for work done on university contracts and grants.

Technical Labor (T Labor)

Technical labor is designed for research support at a high technical level, including quality assurance reports, facility set up and operation, etc. It is based on the weighted salaries of:

Prof. Thomas A. Cahill (Atmospheric Sciences and Physics)
Prof. James F. Shackelford (Chemical Eng./Materials Science)
Prof. Kevin D. Perry (Meteorology, U. Utah)
Res. Prof. Steve S. Cliff (Dept. Of Applied Science)
Staff Research Associate Lee Portnoff
Staff Research Mechanic
Undergraduate Students Assistants

Rate: $74.00 per hour

Minimum assignment: 4 hours

Support Labor (S Labor)

Support labor is designed for support of operations, maintenance and construction of equipment, calibration, field operations, etc. It uses many of the same personnel as above, but weighted to support activities.

Professor Thomas A. Cahill (Atmospheric Sciences and Physics)
Research Professor Steve S. Cliff (Dept. Of Applied Science)
Staff Research Associate Lee Portnoff
Staff  Research Mechanic
Administrative Assistant II
Undergraduate Students Assistants

Rate: $41.00 per hour

Minimum assignment: 4 hours

Advanced Light Source Access

This is an internal rate that reflects all the costs of maintaining the synchrotron XRF microprobe at the Beam Line 10.3.1 of the Advanced Light Source, LBNL. This rate is built into the analytical rates (below)

Technical Labor (using rates above)
Support labor
Travel to LBNL
Supplies and expenses
Detector repair and replacement (amortized)

Rate:    $201 per hour

DRUM Mass and Optics

This rate covers all the laboratory costs of running DRUM samplers. It is based upon the labor rates above, plus supplies and expendables. It covers:

Substrates
Loading
Downloading
Mass by soft beta ray transmission – 340 pts/strip
Optical attenuation vs wavelength, 350m – 820 nm – 340 pts/strip
Quality assurance report
Archiving samples

 Rate: $267.00 per strip

 Minimum assignment: 1 strip

DRUM S-XRF

This rate covers the costs of analyzing the DRUM strips at the DELTA Group S-XRF beam line 10.3.1. at the ALS, LBNL. It includes Technical and Support labor plus the ALS access charge (above), plus travel to the ALS, expendables, detector replacement, and a detailed quality assurance report. The rate is only available in a block of 16 strips since the set up and calibration by itself takes often 24 hr/run. In some instances, equivalent groups of strips can share a run. It covers:

Transport of samples to and from Berkeley
Set up and quality assurance runs to 65 NIST traceable standards and 2 NIST SRMs
Analysis at 340 points on the DRUM strip
Date reduction via the IAEA preferred AXIL x-ray code
Preparation of data files and disks

Rate:  $19,094.00 for 16 strips, 340 points per strip

Minimum assignment: 16 strips

Filter S-XRF

This rate covers the costs of analyzing Teflon or Nuclepore filters at the  DELTA Group S-XRF beam line 10.3.1. at the ALS, LBNL. It includes Technical and Support labor plus the ALS access charge (above), plus travel to the ALS, expendables, detector replacement, and a detailed quality assurance report. The rate is only available in a block of 100 filters since the set up and calibration by itself takes often 24 hr/run. In some instances, equivalent groups of filters can share a run. It covers:

Transport of samples to and from Berkeley
Set up and quality assurance runs to 65 NIST traceable standards and 2 NIST SRMs
Analysis at 5 points on each filter
Date reduction via the IAEA preferred AXIL x-ray code
Preparation of data files and disks

Rate: $4592.00 for 100 filters

Minimum assignment: 100 filters

 Sampler Rental

The DELTA Group has a number of 3 DRUM, 8 DRUM and IAS filter samplers that it uses in its studies. On occasion, these may be rented out as long as they don’t interfere with DELTA Group programs. The cost is based upon sampler amortization over 3 years and annual pump replacement, costs shared with the DELTA Group’s own programs. All rentals include an initial flow check. Shipping and handling cost extra.

Assuming availability, priority for rentals is determined on a case by case basis, but includes factors:

Scientific uniqueness of the study
Prior experience of the investigators
Commitment to funded post study analytical analysis at the DELTA Group
Risk to the sampler (remote sites, difficult conditions, likelihood of sampler delays upon return, etc.)
Benefit to the teaching, research, and public service missions of the University of California

Rates:

for an 8 DRUM with pump, inlet (does not include PM10): $320.00 per month or any part thereof which includes one hour of T labor and six hours of S labor per month.

for a 3 DRUM with pump, hoses, PM2.5 inlet: $123.00 per month or any part thereof which includes three hours of S labor per month)

for an International Aerosol Sampler (IAS) with pump, hoses:$123.00 per month or any part thereof

Non-standard samplers and other services: Non-standard samplers may be occasionally available.  We provide here temporary rates until we have better information on true costs.

Hi-volume sampler with/without sizing plates: $ 74.00 or $148.00 per month or any part  thereof (1 hr/2 hr T Labor)

Lundgren sampler:$ 82.00 per month or any part thereof (needs pump) (2 hr S labor)

Calibrated non-critical orifice meters: $ 10.00 per month or any part thereof (1/8 hr S labor)

Pump Gast: $ 21.00 per month (1/4 hr S labor)

*Other DELTA Group services may be negotiated based upon the above labor rates. Rates may change at any time*
